How to release a ratchet strap
Open the handle all the way, spill the tension, and unhook. What to do when a ratchet feels stuck, without hitting it.

Releasing a ratchet is the part people rush, and it is the part with stored energy. A motorcycle suspension, a bowed board, or a simply over-cranked strap can move when the pawl lets go. The fix for a "stuck" strap is almost always more opening, not more force.
- Find the release. On many ratchets, including the AUGO listing's description of a black spring-loaded handle, you pull a latch in the grip and then move the handle.
- Hold the latch and swing the handle open until it lies flat, typically more than 180 degrees from the closed position. That position is what lifts the pawl clear of the gear on a common design. Straight up is not open enough.
- With the handle fully open, pull webbing off the spool to create slack. If the load is springy, pull a little, move to the opposite strap, and come back. Unloading one side completely can dump a bike.
- Unhook the fittings. Close any safety latch again so it does not snag the webbing while you coil the strap.
- If the handle will not travel, the webbing may be packed so tight against the housing that the gear cannot move. Ease whatever is pushing on the load, a jack, a second strap, or simply less pretension, and try the full-open position again. Do not strike the ratchet.
Cam buckles are a different gesture. Lift the thumb lever and pull the webbing back through. There is no mandrel full of stored wraps, which is one reason they are kinder on a kayak. They also publish much lower working loads in this catalog. Rollercam's hook-end set states 350 lb.
Once it is off, look at the webbing you just stressed. A new cut or a hook that opened up is a retirement, not a next trip. Coil it using the storage notes.
Questions readers actually ask
Why won't my ratchet release?
On a typical pawl ratchet the handle has to swing all the way open, flat past the straight-up point, before the spool freewheels. A half-open handle still holds the load. Over-tight webbing or a spring-loaded cargo, such as motorcycle forks, can also keep the mechanism jammed until you ease the load.
Should I hit the ratchet to loosen it?
No. Hammering a tensioned ratchet is how hooks fly and housings crack. Ease the load, open the handle fully, and pull webbing off the spool.
